The road to recovery is full of friends

The long road to self-healing took a step in the right direction when the Recovery Project presented a spirited trek across the Brooklyn Bridge to confront the stigma of addiction, culminating with a free concert at Cadman Plaza by music goliath Smokey Robinson.

Thousands of ex-addicts joined their families, treatment providers and advocates to form “a living symbol of recovery” as they traversed the historic viaduct from Manhattan to Downtown Brooklyn for A&E Network’s 2009 Recovery Rally and concert where the gracious King of Motown, a recovered cocaine addict, wowed the crowd with a crowd-pleasing repertoire of his Top 40 hits, plus songs from his new album.

Sharing the spotlight with Robinson were individuals in recovery from across the country who shared their remarkable stories of determination and hope.

More than 22 million Americans struggle with addiction to alcohol and other drugs, yet fewer than 10 percent receive the treatment they need, according to the Recovery Project, a multi-faceted, multi-year initiative to raise awareness “that addiction is a treatable, recoverable disease.”
