Throw up your hands and rejoice, Brooklyn! Why, you ask? Because it’s finally the weekend, and lucky for you, we’ve got plenty of tips on how to keep yourself busy for the next 48 hours.
• Friday night is date night — right? — so grab that special someone and go see “In the Next Room,” a play about sexual repression and the rise of the vibrator. Or if “Virgens” are more your thing, go see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O in her new experimental theater production, “Stop the Virgens” at St. Anne’s warehouse.
• Start Saturday off with a buzz — literally — at Brooklyn’s first-ever craft beer festival, Brooklyn Pour. The booze is unlimited and it starts at 2 pm — so you can skip brunch and head right into drunk.
• Now that you’re lightly toasted, check out Open House New York, which will be taking over the borough this Saturday and Sunday, shedding light on all those dark and dusty corners of Brooklyn we don’t often see. Make sure to stop by Greenpoint’s wastewater treatment plant for a tour, or head to Green-Wood Cemetery for an exclusive stroll through their mausoleums.
• If you’re into experimental rock ’n roll and you’re in the mood for an old movie, head out to Park Slope and plunk down a few dollars to watch guitar legend Marc Ribot play his original score to Charlie Chaplin’s “The Kid,” live at PS 31. Plus, you can pat yourself on the back: all the proceeds go towards funding school programs including math and arts.
• Everyone knows that fruits and vegetables are best consumed in dessert (or alcohol!) form, so as the sun goes down, go grub on some apple pie — or if you’re brave enough, bring one of your own to enter into the bake-off — at Enid’s annual apple pie contest in Greenpoint. Want more apples? Sunday marks the beginning of cider week, a celebration of booze made from the holiest of fruits!
• If the pie contest wasn’t enough competition for you, hightail it to the Bell House on Sunday afternoon for the Bacon Takedown, and bring your appetite for salty breakfast meat with you. Once again, ditch your brunch plans — there’ll be plenty of bacon to go around, and we promise you won’t even miss your eggs Benedict. But just in case you have a hankering for something other than pork, there will be plenty of options — on wheels! — at the Food Truck Rally at Grand Army plaza.
• Sunday night, go see “The Tale of Frankenstein’s daughter,” at Brooklyn Art Exchange in Park Slope — after all, Halloween is only two weeks away.
