Coney Island was the place to be on the Fourth of July this year as thousands of people from the borough and beyond came out in droves to celebrate Independence Day Brooklyn-style.

Holiday revelers didn’t let Thursday’s 90-degree heat stop them from relaxing on the beach (if they could find an empty spot) and going for a spin on the rides at Luna Park (which was open despite concerns that it might be closed for the Fourth due to reports that the Astro Tower was swaying in the wind).

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut broke his own record at Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest by chowing down on 69 franks and buns in 10 minutes, the Cyclones faced off against the Aberdeen IronBirds, and the day came to an end as the crowds enjoyed a fireworks display from the Boardwalk.
