Thousands of fitness aficionado hit the pavement over the weekend to run in the New York Road Runners annual RBC Brooklyn Half Marathon.
Over 25,000 contestants began the 13.1 mile course starting near Grand Army Plaza, circling through Prospect Park, until finally heading south on Ocean Parkway all the way to the finish line in Coney Island.
A rainy forecast couldn’t stop these determined runners from finishing the race. Even with dreary weather 25,389 racers completed the course, according to New York Road Runner.
Supportive friends and family members stood outside clad in ponchos and with umbrellas, waiting to be reunited with the participants at the end of the race.
One runner, Natalie Wesley, had a team of supporters waiting for her including her partner, daughter, sister and nephew.
“The rain made it tough, but there’s nothing like marathon energy and the excitement of seeing my sister complete her goal,” Vasquez said. “While we wished the weather was nicer, we had a great time together.”
Following the race, participants received a medal for their hard work before heading to the celebratory after party at Maimonides Park to grab a snack and cheers to their accomplishment.
The Brooklyn Half Marathon is hosted annually with fun activities for the whole family including Rising New York Road Runners Events, races for young runners.
