Two cops were honored last week by the 78th Precinct Community Council for taking an alleged gun-wielding thug off the street.
On Oct. 13, Sgt. Clarence Dawson and Arafat Cooper were on routine patrol when they received word of a male with a handgun was holding up a McDonald’s restaurant at Fourth Avenue and First Street.
William Russo, an executive officer at the 78th precinct said the suspect displayed the gun, and demanded money. Apparently not sated at the popular fast food restaurant — he demanded “more money,” Russo said.
The cops searched the area, and quickly found the suspect, who had in his possession a loaded firearm and $1500 in cash, Russo said. The suspect had a criminal record, including an attempted murder charge, the executive officer told the 78th Precinct Community Council. “He should be going back to jail for a long time — thanks to the good work of these police officers,” Russo said.
For their efforts, the cops received plaques inscribed with their names, and hearty applause from the crowd at the community council’s Oct. 27 meeting, held in the precinct, 65 6th Avenue.
