An 80-year-old woman is dead after a driver struck her on a Bath Beach street July 25.

Police identified the woman as Margherita Nanfro of 16th Avenue in Bensonhurst. Family members gathered at Nanfro’s residence to comfort one another hours after the crash.

“It’s a tragic accident,” said her niece, Lorraine Devito, who last spoke with her aunt on July 24 when Nanfro called to wish Devito a happy birthday. “She always remembered everybody’s birthday. She was very sentimental with dates.”

Nanfro was crossing Rutherford Place near Bay 16th Street at 12:20 pm when the driver of a Honda Civic travelling westbound on Rutherford Place hit her, police said. Paramedics rushed Nanfro to Lutheran Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, according to police reports.

The driver remained on the scene, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
