Green-Wood Cemetery, in partnership with Brooklyn Botanic Garden, will host the eighth annual Christmas Tree Recycling and Wood Chip Mulch Giveaway, January 1-9.
Brooklyn residents are invited to drop off their Christmas trees daily between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.Free woodchips — perfect for landscaping projects — will be available for free, for those who bring their trees to be mulched.
A special event will be held January 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when Master Composters from the NYC Compost Project in Brooklyn will be on hand to answer questions about the benefits of using wood chip mulch, including how mulch protects the soil, helps retain soil moisture, protects against rain damage, increases the survival of trees, and reduces the growth of weeds — all of which helps a garden reach its maximum potential. Holiday trees will be chipped on the spot during this special event.
Christmas trees must be free of all lights, ornaments, plastic bags, wires, wreaths or swags.
Participants should enter through the main gate of the cemetery, FifthAvenue and 25th Street. Green-Wood offers free mulch all year round on a daily basis from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
