Unaffordable at this price

To The Editor:

I read with interest Myron Shulman’s letter, regarding his plight with the huge increase for his rent stabilized apartment.

When asked about these increases, the mayor, in the past, has said that it must be all right since both landlord and tenant groups aren’t pleased. This is no answer from a mayor who claims that he is making affordable housing. Not so, not with these increases.

This last round of increases really was the pits. Tenants, residing in their apartments for more than six years, were hit with $45 and $85 increases for one- and two-year lease renewals, respectively. Instead of looking to give Mr. Bloomberg a third term, the City Council should have petitioned the state for some rental relief for tenants as the economy worsens.

As it stands now, a new precedent has been set with these much higher increases in rent. Is this what tenants have to expect each year?

I would like to form the ‘ABB’ club –Anything But Bloomberg. Please join with me.
