‘Unofficial’ CEC 20 moves on its agenda

Even though School District 20’s Community Education Council (CEC) doesn’t legally exist, it was business as usual at the group’s meeting last week.

“We did it with the thought in mind that eventually, when the [state] Senate does vote and the bill is passed, it will go back to CECs,” explained council President Laurie Windsor. “If it doesn’t, then we’ll take it from there. We went on as if it was the status quo prior to June 30.”

That date marked the expiration of mayoral control and CECs. Now, the Senate is reportedly ready to reauthorize mayoral control, as well as CECs.

District 20’s CEC, which advocates for public schools in Bay Ridge, Fort Hamilton, Borough Park and part of Bensonhurst, elected officers at its July 22 meeting in hope that the election would count if the council is soon reinstated.

“I think it will be binding,” Windsor said. “That was the premise that we were going on — that it would be binding and it would hold.”

While Windsor was reelected president, the remaining officers are as follows:

Mark Bramante, first vice president;

Stanley Ng, second vice president;

Dina Gangemi, recording secretary;
