The Gowanus Canal Conservancy is looking for volunteers to participate in their monthly Clean & Green, which meets this month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., September 19. Volunteers should meet at First and Bond streets, west of the Gowanus Canal.
Volunteer tasks will include picking up trash, weeding, mulching and/or planting, as well as helping Conservancy members install specially hand-crafted bird and bat houses in select locations.
The Conservancy will also be running a data collection project in collaboration with the American Littoral Society, a group which promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat by cleaning coastal areas throughout the country.
Volunteers will be armed with data cards and will work in small teams to track what types of debris they pick up. The American Littoral Society will analyze the data from this clean up and other sites to prepare an annual report on trends in garbage.
All volunteer efforts will help the NYC Parks Department’s GreenStreets program and help street ends thrive, while improving both the health and beauty of the Gowanus Canal.
