More than 20 local volunteers will spend their weekend revitalizing the creative studios operated by Black Trans Femmes in the Arts, a crucial community space supporting Black trans femme artists in Brooklyn.
BTFA Studios offers a sanctuary for local artists, providing free access to a comprehensive arts space that fosters safety, community, and artistic growth. The Brooklyn Navy Yard facility includes a photography and video studio, visual arts workspace, meeting room, lounge, and co-working areas, all designed to remove financial barriers and enable artists to pursue their craft in a supportive environment.
During the volunteer day, participants will roll up their sleeves to paint walls, reorganize equipment, and ensure the space remains functional and welcoming. Volunteers will also gain an up-close look at the studio’s diverse facilities, which support a wide range of artistic pursuits — from dance and visual arts to media production.

Jordyn Jay, founder and executive director of BTFA, expressed deep appreciation for the community’s support.
“We appreciate Brooklyn Org and the Spark Prize for connecting us with supporters who stand with Black trans femmes and believe in our artistry,” Jay told Brooklyn Paper. “We’re excited for our Brooklyn neighbors to help us refresh this essential community space, where trans artists have the freedom and safety to create.”
BTFA’s mission extends beyond maintaining the studios. The organization is dedicated to building community and mobilizing resources through programming that centers Black trans femmes. It also produces projects created by the collective, providing critical visibility and support for this underserved community.
