Walking through history

The New York Times “Newspaper in Education Program” and Green−Wood Cemetery have partnered to present a development workshop to assist teachers throughout the New York region in using Green−Wood Cemetery as a resource for their lessons about the Civil War, Industrial Revolution and 19th Century New York.

Titled “Walking Through History⁄Read All About It! A One Day Professional Development Workshop for Educators,” the seminar will take place on−site at Green−Wood, July 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program begins at Green−Wood’s main gate, 25th Street at Fifth Avenue.

Open to all teachers, the workshop will combine a tour of Green−Wood that will highlight such New York⁄American innovators as Horace Greeley, Leonard Bernstein, DeWitt Clinton, Peter Cooper, John Matthews (the Soda Fountain King) and the Civil War Soldiers’ Monument on Battle Hill and will be led by Green−Wood’s School Program Manager Steven Estroff and Stephanie Doba, Manager of The New York Times “Newspapers in Education” program.

Participants will also learn how to access “The New York Times” archives (dating back to 1851) and find actual news stories and luminaries whose monuments are at Green−Wood.
