Wannabe Palin is fair game in Red Hook

A ‘pit bull with lipstick’ has found a temporary home in Red Hook.

Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin—a cardboard likeness of the former beauty queen/hockey mom, that is—is already attracting crowds at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition’s fall show.

The installation, “A Photo Op with Sarah Palin,” was created by artist Dawn Robyn Petrlik, who most recently earned headlines for her “Lonely Death of Esmin Green.”

The Palin piece, she said, is more light-hearted. It features Palin, one of her daughters, a life-sized caribou crafted of fake fur, and space for an audience member to join the hunting party.

“It’s ironic to be staunchly pro-life but quite happily engaging in sport hunting,” Petrlik said of her subject.

Petrlik, a Windsor Terrace resident, built the piece in five days, finishing just in time for the show’s opening on September 13. She said Palin supporters and detractors alike have universally loved the piece, which is for sale for $12,500.

“Every viewer wears their own veil of opinion when they look at it,” she said.

Here, the artist is pictured in the installation she created. The rifle she holds is made of cardboard.
