It’s a war of the flyers.
Borough President Marty Markowitz’s office is currently distributing a one-page fact sheet about the beep’s controversial plan to construct a $64 million amphitheater in Asser Levy Seaside Park. But Brighton Beach residents opposed to the project say Markowitz’s flyer is misleading and have begun circulating their own flyer issuing the “truth.”
“This gives you some facts, the truth, no B.S.,” said Ida Sanoff, who encouraged local residents to read the pamphlet at a recent Community Board 13 meeting.
Markowitz’s flyer boasts of “improvements on the way,” such as “new walkways, paths and green space; expanded, world-class playground.” There is no mention of the word “amphitheater.” Instead, the letter cites a “covered summer bandshell with removable seats.”
It insists, “Public access to the park will remain as it is today.”
The flyer continues, “The new bandshell will be open-air — not a 10-story building with walls — and will be used for performances only in the summer months.”
But the supposed “no B.S.” flyer states otherwise.
“It’s an amphitheater, not a bandshell,” it reads. “The amphitheater will be as high as a nine or 10 story building and will be surrounded by almost 20 foot high walls.”
“The ampitheater will be a permanent, stadium type structure, covered with a plastic roof that will host various events year round, including at least a four month concert season,” it adds.
Sanoff has teamed with local residents to create the Friends of Seaside Park, a non-profit community-based organization “whose purpose is to promote and assist with the restoration, preservation, maintenance and safety of Seaside Park.” To join the group, contact 212-987-0565.
