DUMBO crime wave
Thieves broke into an office building at 55 Washington St. over the June 19 weekend, stealing more than $10,000 in property from two companies.
Mionetto USA, a wine importer, lost more than $500 in vino, plus several laptop computers, while Witch Games, a computer gaming company, was hit for $750 in video games, plus a TV and a computer monitor.
It’s not the first time crooks have pilfered this particular DUMBO building, which is between Water and Front streets. A rash of break-ins last year, prompted stepped up police presence in the neighborhood down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass.
Four play
At least four women had their purses, or the contents of said purses, stolen last week. Here’s a roundup:
• A thief took a purse containing $70 from a woman’s office on Joralemon Street on June 16. The victim told police that she had left her purse in the bathroom of the building, which is between Court and Clinton streets, at 4 pm, and returned 10 minutes later.
• A shopper at Payless shoe store on the Fulton Mall told cops that her wallet — with $300 inside — was taken at around 5 pm on June 18. The victim said she was trying on shoes.
• Another office worker told cops that her wallet was pulled right out of her purse while she was at work around midday on Court Street between Remsen and Montague streets on June 19. She told police that the theft must have occurred while she was using the copy machine. There was no money in her bag, but the purse itself was worth $400.
• The same day, another shoe shopper put her cash-free purse down at Macy’s on Fulton Mall between 4:30 and 4:50 pm, and never saw it again. The department store, which is between Lawrence and Bridge streets, is a frequent haunt of pickpockets.
Summer school
Thieves broke into a Dean Street public school over the weekend of June 12 and stole $1,121 from a teacher’s office.
The victim told police that the money was in a locker, which she had left unlocked when she left the school, which is between Third and Fourth avenues.
Tour de Brooklyn
A pricey bicycle worth $1,000 was stolen from in front of the beloved River Cafe on Water Street on June 19.
The victim told police that he saw a man take the bike at 11:20 am and ride away from the restaurant, which is at Old Fulton Street.
Work it out
A thief stole $1,140 in jewelry out of a locker at the New York Sports Club on Boerum Street on June 19.
The fitness fanatic told cops that she had begun working out at the gym, which is between Pacific and Dean streets, at 12:30 pm and returned to her locker an hour later to discover that she had been burgled — and burgled bad.
Stop that van!
A woman watched helplessly from her 14th story apartment on York Street as a thief stole her Dodge Caravan on June 20.
She later told cops that she was powerless to do anything as the thief drove away at 4:45 pm from her building, which is at Gold Street.
