Wedding of ‘Mr. Q & Ms. U’ – P.S. 255 students revel in wonderful wordplay

Hundreds of guests dressed for a ball flocked en masse to the grand auditorium of Public School 255 to witness the much-anticipated wedding of “Mr. Q” to “Ms. U.”

The “letter girl” sprinkled letters down the aisle to prepare for the bride, and Ms. U was escorted to the groom by Principal Linda L. Singer, along with her very own Mom.

The groom, Mr. Q, anxiously awaited the arrival of the bride; the “Justice of the Peace” performed the ring ceremony.

All guests were assured that Mr. Q would never again be alone in the English language. Attendees enjoyed dancing and singing during the reception.

The wedding of Mr. Q to Ms. U was the brainchild of Pre-K teachers, Joyce Shumel and Suzanne Feldman, along with their paraprofessionals, Yolanda Veloso and Svetlana Protosova.

The Pre-K classes use the “Land of the Letter People” program to build the foundation of phonemic awareness and letter recognition. The Abrahams company program provides an entire curriculum in all content areas.

The idea of having Mr. Q “marry” Ms. U helps the children to understand the idea that the letter Q must always be followed by the letter U in the English language.

PS 255 is located at 1866 East 17th Street.
