What a success!

Huzza, huzza, Sam Luddy! The extraordinary music teacher at Success Academy is the 2016 recipient of the Success Academy Excellence Awards.

Standing O pal Sam purchased buckets and barrels, and started his own after-school bucket-drumming club. Our pal Sam teaches kindergarten, first, and second grade, and tutors musical scholars who own instruments, but can’t afford the cost of regular instruction.

Last February Sam was approached by a parent who suggested the school put on a version of the Broadway play “Wicked” or “Hamilton.”

“I thought that might be a little too much for kindergarten scholars,” he said.

But the suggestion sparked the old light bulb, and Sam began thinking of writing his own musical, featuring his school. He sketched out the plot, wrote the music, and the rest is history.

The production brought the whole school community together — one parent created the choreography, other parents helped build sets, and homeroom classes contributed one song each.

“The scholars have worked so hard to memorize their lines and learn their roles,” Sam added. “I tell them, your goal on stage is to make your parents cry, a little bit.”

Sam now has a Standing O to add to his trophy collection!
