Only in Brooklyn

There are some things your can only see in Brooklyn like the green lady of Carroll Gardens, that guy who drives around Williamsburg in a red Subaru loudly singing oldies, and starting tonight at the 17th Brooklyn Film Festival, you can see an indie movie about a pretty girl on a road trip with her equally pretty boyfriend and a melting cupcake called “I Believe in Unicorns.” The festival runs through June 8.

8 pm at Windmill Studios NYC [287 Kent Ave. between First and Grand streets in Williamsburg, (718) 384–7300, www.brooklynfilmfestival.org]. $12–$40.

On the boil

Have a great story about the straw that broke the camel’s back or a time you flipped your lid? Fine-tune your tale of I-can’t-take-it-anymore turbulence and compete in the Moth StorySlam competition, where the theme of the night is “Boilin’ Point.” Come and watch or put your name in a hat for a chance to compete on stage with other local storytellers.

7:30 pm at the Bell House [149 Seventh St. between Second and Third avenues in Gowanus, (718) 643–6510, www.thebellhouseny.com]. Free.

Kart-ography

Get a ROM cartridge-full of nostalgia at Union Hall’s retro video game competition “Our Princess is in Another Castle,” where the game of the night will be “Super Mario Kart” for the Super Nintendo — the original and still the greatest title in the “Mario Kart” oeuvre. Star Cups (or, more likely, free drinks) will be awarded to the best and the worst players.

8 pm at Union Hall [702 Union St. between Fourth and Fifth avenues in Park Slope, (718) 638–4400 www.unionhallny.com] Free.

Horny: See “I Believe in Unicorns” and other oddball films at the Brooklyn Film Festival, kicking off May 30.

Booze and the bees

Want to give your Wednesday night a little buzz? Grab your favorite battery-powered “massager” and head on down to Park Slope sex store Babeland for bubbly cocktails, sex demos, giveaways, and goodie bags at its “Ladies Night Out” event. We’re not sure what the demos will be, but Babeland has a rep for teaching lady-folk the fine art of more-gasm, B.J.s, and couples’ massage.

7 pm at Babeland [462 Bergen St. between Fifth and Flatbush avenues in Park Slope, (718) 638–3820, www.babeland.com.] Free.

Show some Love

Lunch breaks are about to get a lot more exciting for Downtown cubicle monkeys. The Brooklyn Academy of Music once again brings its free, summer-long, noontime R&B concert series to MetroTech Commons — a courtyard otherwise filled with Chipotle wrappers and confusing pieces of lawn art. This year’s fest kicks off with Darlene Love, one of the subjects of the documentary “20 Feet From Stardom,” and the voice behind the 1962 hit “He’s a Rebel.

Noon in MetroTech Commons [2 Metrotech Center between Jay Street and Flatbush Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn, (718) 636–4100, www.bam.org.] Free.

Whole lotta Love: R&B legend Darlene Love will kick off BAM’s R&B Festival at MetroTech this year.
