Preach it
Little-known soul legend Jimmy “Preacher” Ellis has been setting dance floors on fire since the 1960s, but, remarkably, has never played New York City — until now. Ellis will perform songs from all across his long career — much of it for the first time in decades — backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band.

Getting horny
Saxophonist Colin Stetson has an impressive resume — Arcade Fire, Tom Waits, David Byrne, and LCD Soundsystem doesn’t even scratch the surface of the acts he has played with. But at the Grand Victory on Feb. 9. Stetson is going solo. Also breaking free is bassist Trevor Dunn, who has played in Tomahawk, Fantomas, and Mr. Bungle, in addition to projects that don’t involve Mike Patton.

Everyone loves a sea shanty! The Glyndebourne Festival Opera’s production of seafaring opera “Billy Budd” comes to the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
