Senegal-sational

The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival is off and racing, bringing an eclectic line-up of contemporary music, dance, and theater to the Fort Greene stage. Tonight you can catch a performance by Senegalese pop mega star Youssou N’Dour, who is appearing as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations for Nonesuch Records. Future shows include Devendra Banhart, Robert Plant, and Jeff Tweedy.

Brew dogs

This should get your ale wagging. Beer for Beasts, the annual fund-raising event for the Humane Society of New York City, is back. Sample a sizeable range of suds from Red Hook’s Sixpoint Brewery while lining your stomach with food from the likes of Calexico taqueria, Down Under Bakery pies, and Rick’s Picks pickles. And do it all while hip-hop legend Biz Markie spins tunes.

The craft

Time to meet your maker. Add more hand-printed pun T-shirts and things made out of reclaimed felt to your life when the Renegade Craft Fair returns to 50 Kent Sept. 13 and 14. There will be whimsical jewelry, home wares, and apparel aplenty, plus food from Coolhaus, Kimchi Smoke, and La Crepe C’est Si Bon.

Beats for beasts: Hip-hop legend Biz Markie will perform at Beer for Beasts at the Bell house on Sept. 13, a beer tasting event raising money for the Humane Society of New York.

Formula fun

These artists are no boy scouts! Williamsburg’s Pierogi gallery is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and the festivities will include one of its occasional “Brooklyn Gravity Racers” contests, in which artists and art lovers build, decorate, and race their own artsy pinewood derby cars. The first preliminary race is today, with the final on Sept. 19.

Quiz whiz
