Cyclones 7
Renegades 4 (Game 1)
Aug. 27 at MCU Park
With Hurricane Irene on her way, the Cyclones weren’t taking any chances, cancelling Sunday’s game to play two seven-inning contests on Friday night — and it was a good move, as the Clones won them both!
In the opener, the Renegades put up two runs against usually reliable starter Chris Hilliard before chasing him for reliever Casey Hauptman, who gave up two more.
But that was all she wrote for the Renegades, as the Cyclones scored the next seven runs — five of them in the fourth inning, when Daniel Muno was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Brandon Brown cleared the bases with a double, and Javier Rodriguez doubled home Brown.
Two more runs scored in the fifth on a hit batter and a wild pitch.
Still, the Cyclones rapped out nine hits, including two by Brown.
Cyclones 3
Renegades 0 (Game 2)
The nightcap was all Cyclones as four pitchers combined to shut out Hudson Valley on just five hits.
Starter Randy Fontanez was effective in four innings, and the bullpen of Steve Winnick, the inconsistent Jeremy Gould and T.J. Chism was almost unhittable.
All the Cyclone runs scored in the fourth. Ismael Tijerina hit an RBI double, followed by Javier Rodriguez’s triple. Rodriguez later scored on Brandon Brown’s sac fly.
The wins left the Cyclones three-and-a-half games behind the uncatchable Staten Island Yankees for first place, but one-half game ahead of the Williamsport Crosscutters for the league’s lone wild card slot.
The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449-8497] on Monday night at 7 pm. For info, visit www.brooklyncyclones.com.
