Who needs ‘Shark Week’? Our ‘Debate Week’ begins tonight!

Candidates savage the front-runners in our cable TV debate!

The Brooklyn Paper and Brooklyn Independent Television’s “Debate Week” begins with a barn-burner tonight on the BCAT TV Network — an all-out free-for-all featuring the seven candidates for the Greenpoint-to-Park-Slope City Council seat currently occupied by David Yassky.

The 9 pm cablecast includes a spirited forum, with all the candidates for the 33rd District seat: Isaac Abraham, Ken Baer, Doug Biviano, Ken Diamondstone, Steve Levin, Jo Anne Simon and Evan Thies.

The taping last week featured lots of fireworks — including moderator Gersh Kuntzman needing to nearly physically restrain Diamondstone as he hammered Simon on a question about gay marriage — and is certainly going to make for great TV.

Check it out tonight on the BCAT TV Network, which is channel 56 on Time Warner customers and channel 69 for Cablevision subscribers.

In addition, it will be available online starting on Tuesday at www.bricartsmedia.org/BITspecials and the Community Newspaper Group’s new political Web site BoroPolitics.com.

“Debate Week” continues all week with these other candidate conflagrations:

City Council District 39 (currently held by Bill DeBlasio): Tuesday, Aug. 18.

City Council District 45 (currently held by Kendall Stewart): Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Comptroller (featuring Yassky, John Liu, Melinda Katz and David Weprin): Thursday, Aug. 20.

Public Advocate (featuring DeBlasio, Mark Green, Norman Siegel and Eric Gioia): Friday, Aug. 21 (repeated on Tuesday, Aug. 25).

Again, all cablecasts are at 9 pm and will be available online roughly 24 hours later.
