The Brooklyn Aviators’ winning streak was cut short by the Danbury Whalers on Wednesday as the A’s fell to the hated Connecticut sea mammals 5–2.
Brooklyn still retains their fourth ranked standing in the Federal Hockey League following the loss, but only by a hair — they still have the edge over Akwesasne, the fifth ranked team, with a slim percentage advantage.
But the damage has already been done: the Federal Hockey League is days away from closing out its schedule for this year’s playoffs, meaning the Aviators will most likely not be in the top three and have home ice advantage leading up to the Commissioner’s Cup finals.
The A’s lost on Wednesday, but they were looking like winners throughout the first period: Aviator Chris Campanale scored the round’s only point on a powerplay after Whaler Lynn Beedle was boxed for tripping — Campanale’s first goal in Aviator colors.
But everything fell apart in the second period. Danbury scored four unanswered goals as they shot pucks past A’s netminder Michael DiLorenzo.
Campanale managed to net his second goal during a spectacular third period breakaway, but this last hoorah wasn’t enough to save Brooklyn’s sinking ship: Danbury sealed the A’s defeat by scoring one last point with 10 minutes left on the clock.
