Hudson Valley 2
Aug. 29 at MCU Park
Brooklyn shocked the first-place Renegades, as five pitchers combined gave up just four hits to the upstaters, helping our boys move an extra half-game ahead of the weirdly named Auburn Doubledays in their place atop the New York-Penn League’s anything-goes Wild Card race.
Starter Briam Campusano cruised into the fourth inning before a burst of wildness that included a hit batter and two walks that led to two runs.
But the Clones already had a 3–0 lead by then, thanks to a burst of offense in the second inning that included Wagner “College” LaGrange’s run-scoring double and an Anthony Diriocie two-run homer.
And in the seventh, Nick Meyer’s two-out single scored LaGrange, who led the inning off with a triple, giving the Cylcones a needed insurance run.
Relievers Billy Oxford, Kevin “The Clerk” Smith, Andrew Mitchell, and Ezequiel Zabaleta cruised the rest of the way, securing the win for our boys.
The Doubledays, meanwhile, were losing 6–1 in the top of the fourth in Auburn when the rains came, suspending the game until today. Scoreboard watchers take note: That game will be finished starting at 5 pm today, followed by a shortened, seven-inning contest.
The Cyclones have just five games left in the season, and sit three games in back of Hudson Valley. But two of those five remaining games are at home against the Renegades, giving Brooklyn a chance to cut that lead to one with a sweep.
The Clones close out the season with a home-away-home series against the hated Staten Island Yankees, who sit two games behind our boys in the Wild Card race.
Tonight’s game against Hudson Valley starts at 7 pm.
