Governors Island ferry service returned on Saturday

Free Saturday ferry service to Governors Island returned this weekend from the Fulton Ferry Landing in DUMBO.

Free summer ferry service to Governors Island returned on Saturday — and The Brooklyn Paper was there.

Dozens joined us as we set out on our complimentary ride from the Fulton Ferry Landing at the end of Old Fulton Street to the former Coast Guard base.

Once on the island, we didn’t find much to do, but there are miles of bike paths, lush grounds for picnics, a lot of interesting historic sites, and sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline.

The free transportation, provided by the state, restores direct service to the isle that was started in 2007, but cut last year. In 2008, visitors could only get to the island from Manhattan, a neighboring borough.

Governors Island lies only 400 yards from Brooklyn, but it is technically part of Manhattan due to the way maps were perniciously drawn centuries ago.

The ferry departs from the foot of Old Fulton Street every 20 minutes on Saturdays. For info, visit www.govisland.com.
