Ozzie’s reopens a block away in Slope

The Brooklyn Paper

The shuttered Ozzie’s coffeehouse will be reborn with a new name — and possibly a wine list! — one block south of the defunct shop.

Melissa Azulai — who ran Ozzie’s Coffee on Seventh Avenue for 18 years — is now leasing new digs on Seventh Avenue between Berkeley and Lincoln places, where a Mexican restaurant once stood.

Merchants spotted Azulai — who closed the coffee house this week after a dispute with the landlord — moving furniture and an espresso machine from her vacant old shop to the new location on Wednesday.

She did not return calls seeking comment — but told neighbors she is considering ditching the name “Ozzie’s Coffee” and plans to serve beer and wine in the evenings (although she has not yet filed a liquor license with the state).

The move comes after Azulai posted a sign last week in the storied establishment announcing she would close and implying she had been priced out.

Her landlord, Kevin Kelley, said that Azulai was in fact leaving because she had not paid bills since December.

Public records tell a similar story, indicating Ozzie’s has struggled financially in the past year: Azulai has been sued by a gas company, paid a $15,500 legal settlement and announced that she and her former partner will lease away half of their Fifth Avenue Ozzie’s location.

The new cheaper venue — once the site of La Taqueria — might turn things around.

This time, she will run the business solo, instead of with her ex-husband and former business partner, Allon Azulai.

Longtime merchants are rooting for her.

“Welcome to the block!” said Louis Barricelli, who owns Cousin John’s Cafe & Bakery next door.

well good luck! I can't lie though, i'm expecting to be disappointed. I hated ozzie's for many reasons, so would be surprised if this placed turned out great.

I will give you a shot in the new place though, hopefully a fresh start will do wonders!

for you and me...lets do a good job here, please??

Is she taking over both halves of La Taqueria or just one?

The rent on the combined space is 10K a month, so not sure how in the world she can sell enough coffee to make that rent.

Also the space inside needs renovation. Why is she already moving stuff in without renovating? Please tell me she isn't just filling the old La Taqueria space with the old Ozzie's crap?

She needs to go take a look at Cafe Regular du nord (which incidentally you can practically SEE from this location) to see how a great coffee shop looks and feels.

Why in THE WORLD is she opening this almost on top of Cafe Regular I do not know.

I'm surprised that place stayed around as long as it did-
poor service, mediocre coffee and a general appearance of uncleanliness. Good luck on the move but there are much better places around.

Joey from Clinton Hills says:
Kevin Kelley is going to be pretty busy cleaning out that Ozzie's space. That grime looks deep!

Okay so I just found out that the La Taqueria space was asking not 10, but $16,000 a month.

How may I ask is Melissa expecting to make rent in this new space when

1. It costs more than the rent at Ozzie's did and she couldn't pay the rent there.

2. Her coffee tastes like dirt.

She is taking over the "left" "bar" half of Tacqueria.

How about some praise and good wishes for someone attempting to succeed during the Obama Depression?!

As for opening near other coffee places, the neighborhood can handle it. Cafe Regular is primarily a morning place; and Cousin Johns is a primarily a bakery. I see what she is doing as competing more with the Tea Lounge--just make sure the wifi is free.

Steven:

Why are you defending someone who was a delinquent tenant and served a poor product. Take a look at the yelp reviews of Ozzie's...I'm certainly not alone in finding the place rather terrible.

If she wants to succeed, she should do the exact opposite of what she did at Ozzie's because there the only thing she managed to pull of was bad coffee and stiffing her landlord for rent.

I am a full supporter of mom and pops, but I am a supporter of GOOD mom and pops, not just mom and pops for the sake of having them.

Why defend such mediocrity? Let's aim for better for our neighborhood please.

Loretta's Ghost says:
The owners of Ozzies opened up a cafe on Atlantic Avenue called Loretta's back in 2010. Barely lasted a year.

Ozzies wasn't my favorite place in the Slope (for coffee, Cafe Regular was/is), but the place had decent coffee, and decent pastry, and was a great space where a lot went on. Bad coffee? No, maybe not your favorite, or even mine, but not bad. Better than Cousin John's, and better than the Tea Lounge.

If her relationship with landlord was that bad or one-sided, the place would have closed a while ago. I think an 18-year relationship isn't negated by a few months of problems, especially in this economy.

Yelp reviews? LOL, are you serious?!

Service may not have been the best at times, but Ozzie's coffee was actually pretty decent. I hope the owners can make it this time around. I don't want to have to trek over to the 5th Ave. location to get my weekly supply of their ground coffee.
