City to lower McGuinness speed limit to 25

A mile-long stretch of McGuinness Boulevard in Greenpoint will get the car-pinching treatment from the city, pols announced on Tuesday.

The city will lower the speed limit on the fast-moving thoroughfare that leads up to the Pulaski Bridge to 25 miles per hour and rejigger its traffic signals in an effort to avoid more deaths like the four the road has seen since 2008. A local activist hailed the move.

“I think it will help prevent deaths and any steps we can take to slow traffic is progress,” said John Beadle, a member of the Kings County Democratic Committee.

The official Slow Zone will start at Freeman Street at the base of the Pulaski Bridge and extend all the way to Bayard Street, just short of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The city will also reset the timing of all of the stoplights along that stretch of road to force drivers to get into lower gears.

Politicians made the announcement at the intersection of McGuinness and Nassau Avenue, where a woman was killed by a motorist in December as she tried to cross the fast-paced road. Two other pedestrians and a cyclist have also been killed on that stretch of pavement during the past six years.

Assemblyman Joe Lentol said that Mayor DeBlasio’s Vision Zero plan to reduce traffic deaths to zilch during the next decade is music to his ears after years of calling to squeeze drivers to no avail.

“I have been advocating for traffic calming measures along McGuinness Boulevard for quite some time now, with little success,” said Assemblyman Joe Lentol (D–Greenpoint). “This is the first indication that Vision Zero is making its way into Greenpoint. I applaud DOT Commissioner [Polly] Trottenberg and Mayor DeBlasio’s approach to improving the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists through Vision Zero and I hope that this is only the beginning.”

The street is the second in Brooklyn tapped for a major slowdown in the past two weeks after Atlantic Avenue, which is being designated a 25-miles-per-hour road along its entire eight miles in the borough.

The city will begin installing new signs on May 12 and has vowed to finish by the end of May.

Another progressive step. Eventually they'll just turn that stretch of McGuinness into a green space. Why is it even that way in the first place? Who thought it was a good idea to put a major thruway smack in the middle of a pedestrian heavy neighborhood? Maybe the mooks of yesteryear abstained from walking? That would make sense. Half of the leftovers look like they are going to have a cardiac episode if their shoelace comes untied.

I think the lower speed limit will do very little and the retimed traffic lights will do a lot more. Taking a lane of traffic off the bridge will also help a lot.

Lowering the speed limit is nothing more than a PR purpose. As long as there is no enforcement on the current speed limits and you still have pedestrians and cyclists flouting the laws themselves, the streets will never be safe. I do feel that retimed traffic lights will work, but the anti-car fanatics will never accept this, because it will make sense and not result in inconveniencing motorists, which is what they support over at places such as Streetsblog and Transportation Alternatives. In reality, slow zones only give the theory of giving safety, but not the practice of it.

There are numerous studies that show that a pedestrian hit at 25 has a better chance of surviving an accident that at 40. Lowering the speed limit from 30(city wide or even 35 if it was posted as such) to 25 won't by itself lower speeds. Changing the lights might but also may cause a lot of rear end accidents. It may also cause truck traffic to go to parallel residential streets where the traffic is lighter. People drive the speed they feel comfortable at. Sometimes its more than the limit anyway. Normally speed limits are set based on what the traffic is doing(some set percentage of the drivers).What the City will want to do is to also do enforcement and eventually put in speed cameras. Enforcement will bring speed down if its a place where people speed. Normally most speed cameras are not set at the actually limit but about 5 miles above it. You still want traffic and goods to move. Trucks are the way the city gets feed and you get things delivered. You don't want trucks speeding on narrow residential streets because the arterial roads are blocked by traffic. So there is no misunderstanding I support lowering the limits to 25. Removing too many lanes will force the trucks elsewhere.

Honestly, I don't see how slow zones are really going to solve anything as long as you still have other groups still flouting the laws and the current limit not being enforced. In reality, this is just going to create more traffic where there wasn't originally. Also, doing it on major thoroughfares is a bad idea, because it's used a lot by commercial vehicles, and that will make them even slower than they already are, plus this can cause traffic to be taken into side streets making them go from bad to worse with traffic, and I know many don't want that. For the record, I don't condone reckless drivers, but I hardly hear any responsible cyclists calling out the rogue cyclists when they feel that they don't represent them. Again, this is more of a PR stunt and just something that only looks good in theory but not in practice.
