A breed of their own! Brooklyn Mutt Show celebrates quirky pooches

This dog show goes to the dogs

Brooklyn has its own doggone pooch show — for mutts and misfits, not purebreds and perfectionists.

Brooklyn Lyceum will host its third-ever “Brooklyn Mutt Show” — Westminster’s unofficial wacky cousin — with categories such as “best beard,” “best kisser,” and best Mayor Bloomberg doppelganger.

“The more ridiculous the better,” said Regan Fishman, creator of the March 24–25 event. “It’s not really about being the best — it’s about laughing and having fun.”

This year’s most hair-raising categories include “curliest tail” and a Star Wars character look-alike contest (which is not unlike Westminster’s Pekingese category — oh, snap!).

Expect a quirky cast of characters: there’s Beatrix Honey Badger, a Chihuahua-mix with a talent for eating underwear; Dude, an 11-year-old Collie-mix, who is vying for “Sexy Senior”; and Bunker, a Ridgeback-mix who last year won best kisser.

“A dog’s best feature isn’t that he’s perfect,” said Lisa DeMazza, Bunker’s pooch mama. “That’s why this show is so fun.”

Brooklyn’s star mutts will compete for prize, such as a getaway at a pet-friendly hotel, and can peruse booths with information about doggy diets and apparel. The cast members of “Doggie Moms,” a reality TV show, will also be in the house.

It’s fitting a contest for Brooklyn, where eccentricities — both the human and pooch kind — are not just tolerated; they’re celebrated.

“In Brooklyn, we’re all basically mutts,” Fishman said.
