A freaky National Night Out Against Crime

The National Night Out Against Crime celebration in Coney Island is guaranteed to be the freakiest one on record.

Sword swallowers, fire eaters and other entertainers from Coney Island’s famed carny shows will be on hand to entertain celebrants at the special stand against criminals and drug dealers this August 5 at Steeplechase Park (behind KeySpan Park) on the Boardwalk at West 16th Street from 5 to 8 p.m.

Judd Fischler, the new president of the 60th Precinct Community Council, also promises plenty of free food, as well as giveaways and rides for the kids during the annual event, which will turn 25 this year.

“We’re going all out for National Night Out this year,” promised Fischler, who thanked 60th Precinct Community Affairs Officer Hank Stucken for organizing the affair. “The National Night Out Against Crime has been going on for many years. It’s been a good method for the community to meet each other and meet the men and women of the police department.”

Fischler said that Night Out celebration will give people a “better feel about what’s going on” in Coney Island, Brighton Beach and Sea Gate.

“This is one of the most diverse areas in the city,” he said. “We have a very large Russian community, but we have a very large Pakistani community as well.”

“Besides, how many people can say that they live in an area with a boardwalk, a baseball field, a beach, an amusement park and an area for concerts all in one place?”

Fischler hopes that the diversity he plans to see at Night Out will continue when the 60th Precinct Community Council meets again at the stationhouse at 2951 West 8th Street on September 16 – his first as president.

“We’re going to be making some big changes,” he said.
