They’re little Einsteins!
Student-scientists showed off their own experiments during the District 22 Science Fair at the Carmine Carro Center in Marine Park on May 13. The fair’s biggest takeaway was not how to program a robot to take over the world — rather it was the classic life lesson to never give up, said the mother of PS 222 fourth-grader Daniel McKenna, whose project was to find the perfect angle to catapult a ping pong ball into a target. “It took him a long time, he was very frustrated and wanted to give up, but he didn’t, and finally everything was right — and he was getting them in and he was really proud of himself,” said Josephine McKenna. “He was glad he didn’t give up. It’s a life lesson, couldn’t have gone any better.”
And PS 217 fifth-grader Bersham Brown Jr. had scientific success as well when his 600-piece programmed robot — Meccanoid G15 — moved its arms and legs, and strutted its mechanical stuff forward and backwards, his father said.
“It’s really great for the kids to be interactive with it — entry-level type of robot just to give kids a broad overview about what robots do,” said Bersham Brown Sr. “I was so proud, really proud of him explaining it and presenting it to people.”
