Call it a valuable lesson!
Leaders of a housing-advocacy group on Thursday will walk locals through the process of applying for dozens of so-called affordable housing units inside a new development going up in the People’s Playground.
Members of Neighborhood Housing Services Brooklyn will show attendees how to navigate the online-application process for the 52 below-market-rate units inside Surf Vets Place on W. 21st Street near Surf Avenue, where eligible residents can apply for the apartments doled out via the lottery system managed by the Department of Housing Preservation and Development through March 13.
A rep from the city’s Department of Veterans’ Services will also be on hand to help any formerly homeless vets in attendance learn how to apply for the building’s 82 below-market-rate apartments earmarked for those heroes, who could begin applying for those units back in November through the city’s supportive-housing lottery managed by the Human Resources Administration.
And locals who aren’t ready to move just yet can still attend to learn how to use Housing Connect to apply for forthcoming below-market-rate apartments in the area — including those inside a massive complex set to rise on Surf Avenue between W. 16th and W. 20th streets, which will bring nearly 1,000 such units to the neighborhood when complete.
The meeting co-sponsored by Community Board 13, Councilman Mark Treyger (D–Coney Island), Councilman Chaim Deutsch (D–Sheepshead Bay), Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz (D–Sheepshead Bay), and Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus (D–Coney Island) will take place at 6 pm inside do-good group APNA Community Center’s new Coney Island Avenue home between Ocean View and Brighton Beach avenues.
Those who cannot make it can attend an identical information session at noon on Feb. 22, at Brighton Beach’s Jewish Association for Services-Aged at 161 Corbin Pl.
