Caught on camera: Cops seek brazen Bay Ridge wallet thief

A man swiped a wallet from a young shopper’s jacket inside a Bay Ridge community center last week, and police are asking for help tracking him down.

The theft occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, at Masjid Maryam near 73rd Street and Fifth Avenue, according to the Police Department. Authorities said the unidentified man entered the building, stole a 21-year-old man’s wallet, and fled in an unknown direction.

No injuries were reported.

The suspect is described as about 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighing around 165 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black hat, black pants, and black sneakers.

Police are seeking this man in connection with a wallet theft at the Masjid Maryam Community Center on Feb. 22.

Police released surveillance images of the suspect, who is being sought for grand larceny, on Wednesday.

Reports of grand larceny in Bay Ridge’s 68th Precinct are down more than 54% so far this year, compared to the same time frame in 2024, according to NYPD statistics. Reports of robbery, burglary and grand larceny auto are also on the decline, according to the data — while reports of felony assault are on the rise, up approximately 7% year-to-date.
