They’re taking aim at Bensonhurst.
Retailer Target is planning a miniature Bensonhurst store in place of the Annie Sez and Mandee clothing stores on 18th Avenue near 65th Street, but corporate honchos need locals’ help figuring out what to cram into the smaller-than-average store, they said.
“We obviously can’t fit a full Target store there, so we consult with neighbors, local politicians, we do focus groups, and then we base the assortment off of what we hear,” said spokeswoman Kristy Welker. “We consider a variety of things, ‘Do they have a grocery store nearby? Do they have a pharmacy? Kids apparel? How close are they to other stores?’ All of these factors to make sure we cater to the area — and these smaller stores gives us the opportunity to meet those needs in places where there may not be space for a larger location.”
The so-called “flex format” store — about one-quarter of the size of the company’s Flatbush, East New York, and Atlantic Terminal locations — is slated to open this October and will be a more accessible for Bensonhursters than the further-afield stores, Welker said. It will still sell clothing, home goods, and groceries — including kosher items — that regular-sized stores do, she said.
The shop will be the borough’s fifth Target and its second mini store — the first opened in Downtown’s City Point shopping complex in January.
Construction will likely begin in the Spring, officials said.
