An assistant prosecutor with the District Attorney’s office has died after a bus driver struck her as she rode a bicycle through a Williamsburg intersection early Monday morning, police reported.
Law enforcement sources said that Sarah Pitts, 35, was struck at the corner of Wythe Avenue and Williamsburg Street at 12:35 am on Monday. The bus driver stopped and remained at the scene.
First responders found the victim on the pavement with head trauma and rushed her to Bellevue Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries later on Monday.
No charges have been filed at this time, and the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is continuing its inquiry.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced Pitts’ death in a memorial message on Twitter Monday afternoon. He said that Pitts joined his office back in 2018, describing her as a “brilliant and compassionate lawyer dedicated to seeking justice.”
“She was assigned to the Appeals Bureau and worked diligently with our Post-Conviction Justice Bureau to review parole applications to determine those our office should support,” Gonzalez said. “And when the COVID crisis struck, Sarah selflessly volunteered to come into the office to help with urgent matters and to relieve the administrative staff so they would not bear the full burden of the pandemic. She was a kind and generous worker who will be greatly missed.”
