The Olympic Games are halfway over in Paris, but the fun is just getting started in Coney Island. On Aug. 3, the annual Brooklyn Beach Sports Festival will return to the People’s Playground.
New York City Parks Department designed the free community event for athletes and amateurs of all ages to get in some exercise, indulge in friendly-competition and maybe even learn something new.
According to Ronée Mattingly, deputy chief of recreation at the parks department, the festival has evolved significantly over the past eight years. It started out as a beach volleyball event, she said, and has expanded into a broad celebration of calisthenics and various sports where Brooklynites can show off their skills, compete against other athletes, or just have some fun.
This year, they’ve added a Calisthenics Skills Exhibition and Competition where competitors will try to bust out the most pull-ups, dips, and push-ups. The calisthenics events will kick off at 10 a.m. for youth and seniors, with adult competitions set to begin at noon.
Participants can expect an exciting display of athletic prowess and new challenges.
“Every year, we add or change something to keep the event fresh and engaging,” Mattingly said. “This year is special as we’re building on last year’s introduction of sand pickleball with a full schedule dedicated to it. It’s a sport everyone can try, regardless of age or skill level.”
In addition to the competitive events, the festival will feature a variety of family-friendly activities like a tug-o-war competition, cornhole, music, salsa dancing and an Accept the Challenge Obstacle Course designed to mimic lifeguarding skills. Guests can also come early for a relaxing morning stretch.
“We use activities to highlight our recreation centers because the goal is for you to come out to the park,” he said. “Last year we had city agencies compete against each other but this year we’re going to leave it to the public.”
A local DJ will be spinning tracks throughout the day, ensuring a festive atmosphere.
“We’re bringing music and fun together, creating an energizing environment for everyone,” Mattingly said.
The 2024 Brooklyn Beach Sports Festival will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Coney Island Beach near the West 10th Street boardwalk entrance. The event is free, but on-site registration is required.
