BK’s ‘Glamour’ girl – Junior wins Ruth Whitney Scholarship

Stefania Sainato, a junior in the Pforzheimer Honors College at Pace University, double-majoring in English and communication studies with a minor in journalism, has been awarded The Ruth Whitney Scholarship from “Glamour Magazine.”

The scholarship is awarded to a college student who has had some experience in writing, reporting or design and who has a demonstrated interest in magazine journalism or publishing.

Sainato, the 2008-09 academic year recipient of this honor, is currently an editorial intern at “CosmoGIRL!” magazine, where she has written articles on “everything from fashion to politics” since September 2007.

Past internships include working in the digital department for “Maxim” magazine, and at “Bene” magazine, a publication devoted to Italian travel, culture, and design.

Sainato is a native of Dyker Heights and was formally recognized alongside some of the most extraordinary women in the communications industry at the New York Women in Communications, Inc.’s 2008 Matrix Awards earlier this month.

That same morning, she appeared with other scholarship recipients before a national audience on NBC’s Today Show.

On campus, Sainato’s accomplishments include first honors on the dean’s list every semester and being awarded first place in journalism for the 2007 English Department Writing Contest.

She passes along her passion for magazine journalism to others as a founder of Ed on Campus at Pace, a chapter of Ed2010, a national organization dedicated to helping aspiring magazine editors achieve their dream of working in the publishing industry.

“Ed on Campus at Pace hosts panels with magazine editors, resume/cover letter workshops, and day trips to magazine offices. Several of our members have received internships as a result of our activities. We are fortunate that Pace is located in New York City, home to the largest media conglomerates in the world,” said Sainato.

Although graduation looms slightly more than a year away, Sainato already has her ideal job in sight.

“When I graduate, I plan to work as a magazine editor. My dream job is an editorial position at ‘Glamour’ magazine,” she said.

Having just been awarded The Ruth Whitney Scholarship from Glamour Magazine by Women in Communications is surely taking a big leap in the right direction towards her goal.
