A blaze engulfed a two-story Flatlands home on Avenue L May 1. It took 60 of New York’s Bravest an hour to put out the flames, but not before they ushered two residents to safety.
The inferno’s first embers were stoked in the basement of the home between Utica Avenue and E. 51st Street shortly before 12:30 pm. When fire fighters arrived they found flames scaling the building’s interior, reaching its second floor, and billowing out the windows, according to an FDNY spokesman.
The two residents evacuated the burning building amidst a plume of smoke, suffering from some minor smoke inhalation. One of residents was sent to Coney Island Hosptial to receive treatment for other minor injuries.
