Mayor Bloomberg formally broke ground on the $50-million restoration of McCarren Park Pool in Greenpoint on Monday. Since it was closed in 1984, the neighborhood was without its beloved swimming hole — though the ruins reopened in 2005 as a hot indie rock show venue. But that fame ended last February when Bloomberg promised to restore the Robert Moses–era pool, which is on Lorimer Street between Driggs and Bayard avenues, by spring 2012. “I don’t know how good we look in swimsuits, but we’ll make good on our promise to be the first ones to jump in,” Bloomberg said at the groundbreaking, where a half-finished building provided an ironic backdrop.— Andy Campbell
