The game must go on.
Brighton Beach ball players hit the field on Sunday to honor a slain friend at the 12th annual Anthony Senisi Memorial Softball Game — a tradition one local hopes will outlive them all.
“Even if we can’t run, this game is going to go on forever, or until all of us die,” said Howard Sosner, a pal of the late Brighton Beacher. Senisi, a family man and local plumber, was stabbed in the back amid a tragic case of mistaken identity on Aug. 4, 2007.
Every year since, locals have stepped up to the place for the memorial softball game held on the first weekend of August, where his friends and family take a swing at keeping memory alive in the spirit of fun, camaraderie, and good sportsmanship.
And without any well-defined teams, or scoreboard, there are no losers at the Anthony Senisi Memorial Softball Game — only winners.
This year’s game featured a new banner baring Senisi’s moniker, and the old sign was given to Sensi’s son, James, who was only 11 when his father died.
Sadly, an early organizer of the game, Bill Fallon, died earlier this year, leaving it up to Sosner to carry on the tradition.
“I am picking up the torch and not letting this game die,” Sosner said.
