During the July and August months of 2008, Brooklynites will be seeing jazz. That is, of course, works of visual art inspired by the rhythms and tones of jazz music.
From now through August 31, the Clinton Hill Art Gallery, along with IAM, Inc. (Incorporation of Artists on the Move), will feature the 8th annual Visual Expressions on Jazz Art Exhibition, “Portraits in Blue,” in conjunction with the citywide annual JVC Jazz Festival.
This exhibition focuses on the exploration of the relationship between color and jazz music, featuring such artists as Tafa, Eric Girault, Sadikisha Collier, Ann Tanksley, Abdullah Azia, Emmett Wigglesworth, Joan Chiverton, Mary Jo Schwalbach Gitler, Carol Weaver, Michael Singletary, Alexa Birdsong, and Barry Mason and Barbara Russell.
Gwendolyn Black, both the creator and curator of this event, wanted to create a vehicle for visual artists to showcase their works on jazz music. This exhibit is comprised of over 200 works of art including paintings, sculptures, photography, quilts, and mixed media. Art from artists all across the globe come together in this exhibit, all representing a dedication to jazz music.
In its eighth year, the annual event continues to grow and expand. This year's exhibit marks the first time taking place outside of Manhattan, as the Clinton Hill Art Gallery is the first outer-borough art gallery to participate as an IAM, Inc. host.
“It is my pleasure to team up with IAM, Inc. to present this free Art exhibition inspired by music,” said L.B. Brown, founder and director of this gallery, which first opened in 2004 and is the area's first street-level art gallery. “I am extremely proud that the IAM, Inc.’s executive producer, Gwendolyn Black, views Brooklyn as an important outer borough to promote this special event and that my gallery can play an initial role in developing a Brooklyn base for IAM, Inc.”
Clinton Hill Art Gallery will be co-hosting an artist reception with IAM, Inc. on July 31 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at its location at 154A Vanderbilt Avenue in the Fort Greene Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn. This event is free to the public, but RSVP is recommended. The exhibit runs until August 31.
