The Bushwick Film Festival is set to return for its 17th year from Oct. 16-20 with a new theme, and submissions are still open through mid-August.
This year’s theme, “Producing the Dream,” will explore what it means to dream while celebrating creativity, artistry, and effort through the work of filmmakers and the stories they tell.
With over 5,000 attendees and more than 1,000 submissions from various countries, festival organizers say its mission is to provide a platform for emerging voices and bring together a community through their unique work.
“We are excited to spotlight the dedication and passion that filmmakers pour into their work,” said festival founder Kweighbaye Kotee, in a statement. “We hope audiences are moved by the stories on screen and inspired to take action in producing their own dreams.”
The festival will feature film screenings with a yet-to-be-announced lineup, panels, workshops, neighborhood pop-ups, comedy, and live music at events such as Creative Community Day, and Comedy Night.
At the end of the festival, Awards Night will continue the tradition of recognizing the true talent through awards like Best Feature, Best Short, and Audience Choice Award. Lastly, the festival’s closing party will celebrate the achievements and showcase the award-winning films.
As a nonprofit organization owned by women of color, the Bushwick Film Festival has gained recognition from both city and state, elected officials, and last fall won a $10,000 Stand For The Arts grant. With growing support from officials and the community, the festival has created filmmaking programs that allow storytellers across Brooklyn the opportunity to further develop their craft.
The last call for film submissions is Aug. 15, and the festival itself will kick off on Oct. 16. More information about the full event schedule and film screenings will be available in the coming months.
