A community advocate received a lasting, verdant memorial last weekend in Carroll Gardens.
On June 6, a tree was planted in the Transit Garden at Second Place and Smith Street in honor of Frank Verderame, the dogged neighborhood activist who helped found the garden.
“There will always be something in the garden with his name on it, because he helped us start it,” said community garden member Vicki Devor. “He will be with us forever.”
A former member of the Assembly, Verderame, 79, was born and raised on Second Place. He died in December, and spent decades advocating for a variety of quality of life issues in Carroll Gardens.
From the outset he was instrumental in bringing the New York City Transit Authority to the table and hammering out the details necessary for the garden’s creation.
