As part of Catholic Schools Week, generous students at the Good Shepherd Catholic Academy made Valentine’s day cards and collected funds from Dress Down Day to provide treats to the seniors at the Parish Friendship Club.
The kick off festivities, which included the dress down day, and visit to the Friendship club, began with a special Mass officiated by Father With, pastor of Resurrection Parish and Good Shepherd’s Deacon Chris. Other events had parents sharing experiences on career day; a show from the Harlem Magic Masters; A visit from an Army Vet, Mr. Forte, and a blessing of the updated computer lab.

Calling all essayists
Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-Bay Ridge) is hosting a Presidents’ Day essay contest for students in Brooklyn and Staten Island to commemorate the holiday. Elementary school students in grades three through five are encouraged to participate and write essays about what they would do if they were President to improve the community.
“I’m happy to announce my Presidents’ Day essay contest and encourage teachers and parents to have their elementary school students participate as a way to foster an interest in civics,” said Malliotakis. “I look forward to hearing from students how they would change their communities for the better. At a time when political divisiveness is so evident in our culture, it will be refreshing to hear positive ideas from our local children and hopefully get them engaged in community service,” she concluded.
Each participant will receive a certificate of merit from the representative and contest winners will join her for a pizza party in her office in March.

Alive at 75
It’s an All-Call to all the men and women who served aboard the USS Intrepid to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the commissioning of the carrier. Crew members are invited to be reunited at a special 75th Commissioning Anniversary weekend from Aug. 16 to Aug. 19, 2018 on board the ship.
The Museum is also accepting donations of personal artifacts and memorabilia from former crew members and their families to be displayed. Each item added to the Museum’s collection helps express and interpret Intrepid’s stories of service, and serves to educate and inspire more than one million visitors each year. The celebratory weekend is open to the public and features programs and events specifically tailored for former crew members and their families, as well as opportunities for members of the public to interact with visiting former crew members.
