A pair of costly Clones fielding errors led to a disastrous five-run third inning that lifted the Connecticut Tigers over Brooklyn’s boys of summer on Friday — dealing the Mini-Mets their fifth loss in six games.
Clones starter Gabriel Ynoa held the Tigers scoreless for the first two innings, but everything fell apart in the next frame. The right-handed Dominican Republic prospect gave up a double to Tigers right fielder Patrick Smith then a walk to catcher Bennett Pickar after Cyclones first baseman Alexander Sanchez dropped a simple foul pop-up. A sac bunt by Tigers shortstop Luis Cortez advanced the runners, and a double by center fielder Jake Stewart drove both players in.
Stewart was driven home on an RBI line drive by Tigers left fielder Danry Vasquez, who scored on a 2 RBI single from second baseman Devon Travis — a run around the bases allowed to continue on a throwing error by Brooklyn right fielder Jonathan Clark.
Ynoa and reliever Timothy Peterson kept the Tigers from scoring for the rest of the night, with Ynoa tossing four 1-2-3 innings, but the damage was already done. A small Cyclones rally in the fifth frame — powered by a two-RBI single off the bat of Clones second baseman Juan Carlos Gamboa — fell short.
