Our annual Brooklyn Women of Distinction celebration is one long party.
First there’s our popular magazine — published in our tabloids last week and available online — saluting 27 local powerhouses for making our borough more distinctive with their work and industry. Then there’s our June 7 Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony at Sirico’s Caterers in Dyker Heights, lauding the ladies in front of their families, colleagues, and community.
The evening promises to be a side-splitting shindig, thanks to our gag-meistress of ceremonies — Brooklyn comedian and writer Ophira Eisenberg, host of National Public Radio’s “Ask Me Another,” author of “Screw Everyone: Sleeping My Way to Monogamy” that “Airplane!” producers Zucker Productions optioned for a movie, and one of New York Magazine’s “Top 10 Comics that Funny People Find Funny.”
“Only an event like this — one that brings together so many cool women from around Brooklyn to celebrate great achievements — could get me to take a 45-minute trip on the B37, with a transfer to the B64!” cracked the Canadian-born spark plug, who recently released her second comedy album “Bangs!” on Comedy Dynamics and played herself on the season finale of Home Box Office’s “Girls.” “Isn’t taking not one, but two buses the ultimate expression of love and commitment in Brooklyn?”
Eisenberg — a popular guest on “The Nightly Show,” Fox’s “Red Eye,” MSNBC, “The Late Late Show,” Comedy Central, and VH-1 — brought down the house as keynote speaker at last year’s soiree with gutbusters that demonstrated why she’s a regular riot at top-ticket venues across the country, Canada, and Europe — as well as at local haunts, including Union Hall in Park Slope, the Bell House in Gowanus, and the Brooklyn Historical Society, where she story-tells with the Moth crew.
“If anyone is doing drugs on my street, they are doing organic, free-range drugs, artisanal, small-batch drugs that were grown in a community garden,” quipped the busy wife and new mom, who is equally at home playing silly games with Jeff Goldblum, George Takei, and Sir Patrick Stewart as she is tickling millennials with her deadpan deliveries or courting crowds at neighborhood events — including headlining at the Brooklyn Cat Cafe’s opening in Brooklyn Heights last month.
There’s still time to grab your tickets, knowing your support will help a child in need enjoy the experience of a lifetime — a portion of the proceeds will go to the Camp Brooklyn Fund, which former Borough President Marty Markowitz created for kids from low-income households to attend sleep-away camp.
