It’s a kid’s dream come true!
Local leaders hosted a grand opening last week for a newly constructed playground at the Gravesend Houses in Coney Island, marking a long-awaited victory for the community.
Council Member Justin Brannan, representatives from U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries’ office, members of the New York City Housing Authority and the Gravesend Houses Tenant Association unveiled the new play area after years of advocacy for a safe, modern facility.
“In Coney Island, we deserve the best that our city has to offer, which includes safe and exciting places for our kids to play, learn, and grow,” Brannan said in a statement. “For too long, the previous powers that be overlooked our needs. But today, we are witnessing proof of real investment and care for this community. This new playground will make a lasting impact on the lives of our children, families, and the entire Gravesend community for years to come.”
Thanks to funding secured by Jeffries and the collaborative efforts of the Tenant Association and NYCHA staff, Coney Island’s long-awaited playground upgrade has finally become a reality.
Local leaders were spurred to action after a 2018 report from the New York City Comptroller’s office highlighted the need for improvements, revealing that 70% of NYCHA playgrounds were in “unsatisfactory” condition.
Marie Navarro, president of the Gravesend Houses Tenant Association, expressed pride in the partnership and dedication that led to residents finally receiving the playground they deserve.
“We faced numerous challenges, but we never gave up because we knew our children deserved better,” she said. “After countless walkthroughs, meetings, and follow-ups, we are thrilled to finally see this come to fruition.”
