Fake fiend

A suspect’s plan to buy a cellphone with counterfeit cash went awry when the victim caught and held him for police on Coney Island Avenue on Feb. 8.

Cops say a 71-year-old man tried to buy a cellphone with $600 in fake funds from a man near Avenue U at 7:10 pm. The victim realized the attempted dupe, and retained the man for the police. The suspect also hit the victim in the face before cops arrived, according to a police report.

Officers said they recovered the counterfeit money.

Hear no evil

Three crooks tried to snatch a pair of headphones from a teenager on Neck Road on Feb. 6, an officer stated.

Authorities say the thieves approached the teenager near E. 17th Street at 2:05 pm. The suspects tried grabbing the headphones but when the victim resisted, the perps fled, cops say. The victim was not injured, according to reports.
