There’s no room for trepidation at the Genesis Dance Company’s “Be Fearless! Experience Genesis Dance!” performances this weekend in Downtown Brooklyn.
“My dancers are fearless,” said Founder-Artistic Director Karen Arceneaux, an Alvin Ailey school alum. She founded Genesis Dance in East Flatbush in 2001 as a nonprofit dedicated to bringing dance to local communities.
“If you want to be challenged mentally, if you want to be in awe, if you want to be transformed, then you should come and see this,” she told GO Brooklyn. Arceneaux’s new modern dance work, “Fearless,” commemorates those who have stood up to injustice and discrimination, and features courageous stunts: one dancer literally balances on his head, with no arms supporting his weight, while others throw themselves toward the floor, pulling away just seconds before actually hitting the stage.
The daring program will feature a few additional modern dance works created by Arceneaux and others by guest choreographers Freddie Moore, from the Ailey School, and Christal Brown, of the Bronx-based INSPIRIT dance company — as well as a performance by VON USSAR danceworks, a Cobble Hill-based troupe.
And opening night gala ticket holders get to meet the bold dancers in person at a post-performance dessert reception.
