In the heart of the south side, Williamsburg’s Dominican community has responded to the devastation that has ravaged the nation of Haiti on Caribbean island where many trace their ancestral roots,
At a Community Relief Effort hosted by Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-Williamsburg) and Councilmember Diana Reyna (D-Williamsburg) on January 30 at 441 Lorimer Street, Williamsburg residents contributed over 10,000 pounds of food and over $2,000 worth of medical supplies.
The supplies will be sent to the Dominican Republic before being brought across the border to Haiti.
Reyna urged all North Brooklyn residents to continue to give in the relief efforts and that her thoughts and prayers were with the Haitian people.
“Haiti, as a nation shares a place in my heart, as its neighborhoods and people unite in a history with Dominicans,” said Reyna.“We share an island that is linked with my family’s heritage, and I want to ensure that in this moment of desperation our community in Brooklyn and Queens donates what is necessary. As residents of New York City, we all have come to realize that a disaster can happen to anyone, anywhere at anytime, and it is through community that our spirits are raised, hope is ignited and burdens are shared.”
