Police arrested a Bronx man after he allegedly hit and killed a Staten Island man on 21st Street in Park Slope on June 30.
The driver was charged with vehicular manslaughter in the second degree, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and operating a motor vehicle without a license after he allegedly struck and killed Jose Cardoso with his car between Third and Fourth avenues just after 8 pm.
Police said the driver was driving in his 2004 GMC Van on 21st Street towards Fourth Avenue looking for a parking spot when he allegedly lost control, mounted the sidewalk, and struck Cardoso from behind, pinning him between the building and the vehicle, according to the report.
Police found Cardoso at the scene unconscious and unresponsive, with trauma to the head and torso, according to the report. Emergency medical personnel transported Cardoso to Methodist Hospital in Park Slope, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver allegedly fled the scene after the crash, police said, adding that officers later took him into custody. The police department’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the incident, police said.
